But our research has found an entirely different motivator for containing cats. Concern for their cat’s safety is the primary reason people keep cats inside. And people who allow cats to roam are also motivated by concern for the animal’s well-being. Keeping domestic cats properly contained is crucial to protecting wildlife. Cats are natural predators – even if they’re well fed. Research last year found each roaming pet cat kills 186 reptiles, birds and mammals per year.

Cats speak their own language, not only using sounds, but also gestures and scents that humans don’t understand all that well. Sometimes they purr, sometimes they claw at the furniture. What does it all mean? When your cat struts, holding its tail in a vertical position, approaching you with the tip of its tail bent while nuzzling against your legs, it’s a good sign, experts say. “This means your cat is feeling friendly, wants to greet you and wants to lavish you with attention, ” says Daniela Schrudde, a veterinarian at the Berlin-based Welttierschutzgesellschaft animal welfare society. By rubbing its head against you, your cat is telling you it accepts you as one of its own, she says. Cats have glands behind their ears that release smells when they want to mark their territory, and they like to do this whenever their owner comes home. Missing cat reunited with owner after 11 years on the street

A cat that was missing for almost 11 years has been reunited with her owner - after living on the streets almost eight miles away from home. Missy escaped from Eve McDonnell's car in 2009 at Five Ways in Birmingham and despite a search was never found. But residents in Hall Green spotted the cat living amid rubbish and took her to a rescue centre where they discovered she was microchipped. Full Story
